Spent some time at a couple of places in East Watertown over the weekend, then wrapped things up at an Irish pub in Easton....
Friday night we hit Donohue's in Watertown for apps, pitchers of beer, and lots of peanuts in the shell (they give unlimited free bowls of them there). Toasted raviolis went well with the beer, as did the peanuts. I haven't had a real meal at Donohue's in a few months, but I do recall some of their food being pretty good for a bar. The place was packed but we were able to grab one of those "C" shaped booths in the side room. Could've done without the couple being outwardly schmoopy to the point of nausea across from us, but otherwise it was a fun night.
We had a group of eleven go to the Aegean in Watertown on Saturday afternoon. I have been to this place countless times, often with large groups (once with 41 people!), with very mixed results. Some meals have been absolutely terrible, while others have been excellent. Fortunately, our Saturday meal went into the latter category, as all eleven people at the table liked their meals. I had the combo plate (grape leaves, pastitsio, moussaka, spanakopita, roasted potatoes, Greek salad), with the grape leaves being perhaps the best item. Other standouts were the grilled salmon and the beef gyro. Prices for lunch were downright cheap, with the total bill for eleven of us being about $165, including tip.
Sunday afternoon we went to Brennan's in Easton for a pre-St. Patrick's Day late lunch/early dinner. Brennan's is another place I have been to several times, and I've been happy with the food there in the past, but it wasn't very good yesterday. My French dip included limp roast beef that had little flavor, and my GF's boiled dinner wasn't much better, with the corned beef being pretty fatty. The pints of Guinness were poured well, though, and the homemade chicken soup was very tasty. But overall, I was pretty disappointed in the food there.
