Divane - the good, the bad, and the ugly

Core | Jan 9, 2004 02:59 PM

I went to Divane as a pre-theater dinner last night. I liked the decor, the cute simple menu. I had made a 6:45 reservation but was not seated until 7 pm, which made me a bit nervous about making my curtain time. As soon as we had sat down, three people came by sequentially to ask what we wanted to drink - we appreciated the attentiveness but were not able to figure out what we wanted as we kept on getting interrupted. Once our orders came, it was almost impossible to get a waitperson for a glass of water, etc. We were seated within eyeshot of the hostess so she came to our rescue. I had the lamb chops/lamb shish combination ($15.95). The lamb chop was very good, the lamb shish -- well, I've had better. The cilantro/parsley/onion salad was very strong in the onion department, so I wasn't crazy about that. My companion had the chicken shish/doner combo ($13.95) and was happy with it. The cracked wheat pilaf was tasty and we both passed on the rice and spicy sauce (sorry!). We asked for the bill, and we were ready to pay by credit card and our waiter just slipped away from us and never came back, so we dug out cash and went straight to the cashier with 10 minutes left to curtain and 5 blocks still to walk. This place really needs to get its act together, esp. at pre-theatre when people need to be somewhere! I think I'm going to try Dervish next time - I heard they're pretty good! I've been to Sahara in Murray Hill, and they were tons better than this place.
