Distinctive, Special-Feeling But Not Exorbitant Place for Girlfriend's B-day?

This is the first birthday of hers we've had together, and I'm really psyched for us to have a delightful meal. But I'm having a hard time finding a place that's special occasion-y and has excellent food, but isn't killer expensive. Also, someplace with a slightly distinctive cuisine would be great--straight ahead French or Italian, even really good and in a romantic or nice setting, will I think leave her cold. Maybe someplace with an Asian accent? I've made a reservation at Hearth in view of all the praise it gets here and the more manageable prices, but the cuisine there, though I'm sure very well done, seems like pretty standard new American. Also I've heard, I think, that the room is a little large maybe for an occasion like this.

Assistance on this will be much appreciated, and I'll definitely report on the experience.
