Discounts or cheap eats pre/post theater

Hi Folks!

My sister and I are looking to do the 2-night hotel/dinner/lion king thing for my mom for her 50th birthday. I'm looking for some inside tips on food - most of the theater packages offer a $40/head option with a limited menu at 4 or 5 restaurants, but I feel like I could probably get a better deal (or better food, anyway) for my $120 on my own. We're looking for Italian or American, for a pre or post-show dinner (haven't decided if we're going to the 2pm or 8pm show yet). We'll be dressed for the theater, so a fairly nice place, $40 or less per person. One person suggested going to the French Culinary institute for a cheap-but-good French meal, but I checked out the menu and my mom/sis wouldn't go for that. Here in Boston we have a radio station that sells $50 gift certs for $25 to featured restaurants each week, is there anything like that in NYC? We're fine with public transport, but we're going to be staying in Times Square and seeing the Lion King at New Amsterdam, so something in the general area would be better!

Don't mean to sound picky, just figured the more info I could give you on what I was looking for the more it would help!
