Disappointment at Ithaka

Have been wanting to try this Greek restaurant on E. 86th St. for some time last night we finally did, and I must say, it was a big dsappointment.

We started with a mixed appetizer plate (taramosalata, tzatziki, grape leaves, eggplant) which was the only really decent food we were served all evening. We shared an appetizer of sweetbreads in white wine sauce - which were pressed into a pasty brick, overcooked, completely rubbery, and so salty it was unpleasant. We had a bowl of mussels - mussels were ridiculously tiny, dried out, overcooked, and in a broth which was again, incredibly salty with almost no other tastes.

We shared a main course of large prawns, which were just plain bad. Overcooked, rubbery, flavorless, with a medicinal quality that was quite unpleasant. Served with barely cooked, unseasoned carrots, overcooked broccoli, and an overcooked peeled, plain boiled potato.

Baklava was mushy and not fresh. Yogurt was delicious with walnuts and honey, and the Greek coffee was very good. Also had a decent bottle of white wine from Cyprus, called "Santorini."

I might go in again to try some more appetizers and for a cup of coffee, but that's about it.
