I made reservations a couple of weeks ago at Bistro R in Richmond, VA for Valentine's dinner. We have been here a few times and had really good meals and great service. The lamb shanks are their specialty and deservedly so.
Anyway, we went on Saturday night anticipating a wonderful meal. We were seated quickly and they gave us menus. They were the regular menus with a pink paper insert w/ the Valentine's special menu on it. This was a prix fixe meal involving appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and a chocolate extravaganza for dessert. This was $60 per person. My back story is that I had a gastric bypass in August and cannot eat sweets, much fat and not large quantities of anything. So I decided to order mussels off the appetizer menu. When our waiter came, I gave him the order and he interrupted me to say that they were only serving the special prix fixe menu. I explained that due to surgery, I couldn't eat most of the stuff on the menu. He said, "gee, that's too bad". And that was that. We left, they were very polite, but didn't offer to make any adjustments. I wasn't told when I made the reservations about the menu and we were handed a regular menu when we were seated. So...what would you have done, Chowhounds? I just thought they were very short sighted. They not only lost our money, but no one is going to just wander in off the street at 8pm on Valentine's day, thinking that they can get a seat! We will go back, we LIKE the restaurant, but it left a bad taste and I wonder if we should say something or just let it go?
