Disappointing Jack Falstaff experience

Steve Brooks | Oct 26, 2005 02:48 PM

Had lunch at Jack Falstaff Restaurant on 2nd St. Pricey menu. First time. Looking forward to it. Chic atmosphere. Waiter excellent. Tuna tartar appetizer superb. Other appetizers ho-hum, dry crabcakes. Hostess brought first entree (mine), a fancy-sounding, medium-rare, hamburger. As she was setting it down, top bun set aside to reveal the (not-so-melted) blue cheese, I immediately noticed a chunk of TIN FOIL in the blue cheese...not a speck, but a wadded up piece of bright metal, the size of a Pink Pearl eraser. Apparently she had vision problems because she didn't notice it bringing it out and didn't see it when I pointed at it. She responded with a surly, "AND...?" Then she saw it and hustled it back to the kitchen.

The other entrees arrived and mine returned 5 mins. later, lukewarm and VERY well-done. Miserable. I tried a friend's cumin-encrusted salmon that was WAY too raw. Not a little raw, but the 2-inch thick piece had an inch of cool meat in the center. Plus, it smelled strong. Double jeopardy with salmon.

Sorry, San Francisco deserves better...
