Hi fellow Chowhounds,
My girlfriend went to try the new burger restaurant Rare tonight.
It's located in the Shelbourne hotel at Lexington btwn 37th and 38th.
I had expected something a little swank from reading the reviews, but the interior is quite casual with scuffed tables that look like they are secondhand.
We went early and the place was deserted.
The calamari was _far_ more batter than squid.
Our burgers (we both ordered the Rare Classic (basic) burger, medium) were allright, but certainly nothing special. I think the meat quality might not be very high, and the burgers were not juicy. For whatever reason, they were simply blah and dissatisfying.
Service was friendly, but I overheard someone who I assume was the manager discussing some sort of staff problem in the dining room. Even though the room wasn't crowded, this seemed to go against the general idea of keeping any staff issues out to staff quarters to let diners enjoy their meal in at least the illusion of harmony.
Overall, if you're in the neighborhood and craving a burger, you might find this place useful. But I won't be going back and wouldn't encourage anyone to make a special trip.
I guess my favorite burger place right now is probably either Houston's or Parker Meridian's Burger Joint. I used to be an Island fan, but have experienced some _terrible_ service there and have sworn the place off. One day, maybe I'll get over to Corner Bistro.
Happy weekend to all! :)
