Although I've been a devotee of Joe's for more than 20 years, yesterday's brunch of Maryland Blue Crab Hash with Poached Eggs in a Rosemary-mustard sauce was a huge disappointment. The "hash" consisted of barely browned cubes of potatoes, a thimble full of crabmeat, two poached eggs all floating in a watery sauce. Luckily the waiter had asked whether I wanted my eggs poached firmly, because apparently they are usually cooked very soft. Also, I had to ask for some toast to go with the eggs. My brunch companion's Atlantic Salmon would have been a much better choice.
Since we wanted something sweet to finish off the fishy brunch, we ordered their famous Chocolate Crunch Cake, a long time staple of Joe's menu. Sadly, this one time best confection on the West Side has now become a pale reflection only of the former recipe. The "crunch" inside the cake has vanished only to be replaced by a few hazelnuts on top of a refrigerated slice of fudge.
All in all the brunch was a letdown and if this reviewer can alert at least one diner to avoid the Crabmeat Hash, it will have been worth the time it took to write this up.
