Here's a report on two-thirds of our weekend dining.
Saturday night we had a most enjoyable dinner at Delmonico's, in what is currently a Hilton on City Ave.
Their specialty is steak, and as far as we are concerned, their filet and their sirloin strip are as good or better than anyplace in the area. I always order the small (10 oz.) filet, $26.00 - and it is plenty, delicious and always done just the way I ordered it. My husband says the sirloin strip ($30?) is the best.
We don't order appetizers, because entrees come with a huge wedge of iceberg lettuce with choice of two dressings: a lovely blue cheese, with plenty of cheese, or a very good creamy vinaigrette.
Sides are extra. The hash browns, my favorite, are a cross between Roesti and a potato pancake, crisp and wonderful. One serving serves four people easily. The Lyonnaise potatoes and creamed spinach are winners, too. There is poultry and seafood on the menu, though we've never tried them.
We rarely get to dessert, though I remember that the apple strudel was excellent.
What makes this place very appealing is the atmosphere; very comfortable, good looking, quiet, tables not close together, and soft music playing in the background. There is live piano music, and after 7pm a singer. The music is really "oldies"; the night we were there I heard Mam'selle, which I hadn't heard for years. It's retro, but fine retro.
The crowd is definitely older, and so are we, so that was fine. (And I was the one who complained about mentioning age - sorry!) It was a pleasure that the six of us could hear each other.
Tonight we tried Radicchio at 4th & Wood, a BYOB relative of Laceno in Voorhees. Very good food - their Dover sole is outstanding - but the noise level was very, very high. If you can tolerate the noise, the food is rewarding.
