Dinner in Oakland - Purple Plum

Thanks for all the help re the dinner in Oak/Berk. We finally settled on Purple Plum (since one poster reminded me it's soon to close). Also it's so close and so comfortable there. Hadn't been in more than a year.

It is true they're closing. The Maitre-D' said it'd be sometime between April 15 and 30th. She said that one of th owners might stay in business in the area and was toying with the idea of a take-out place.

The restaurant was bustling as usual, even though we got there pretty early - just before 6. I really love the atmosphere of the place.

As usual, the cornbread and rolls were fab. It's hard not to wolf down hundreds of them before the rest of the meal arrives.

The fried chicken was not as perfect as I've had it before - a little less crispy, but the steak with sauteed onions and roquefort was fantastic. The potatoes were also, as usual, wonderful and they had fresh, perfectly cooked asparagus.

We shared a simple salad with lettuces and fresh beets. Also shared a glass of Syrah...my husband ordered it so I didn't notice the vintner. I am restricted to 1 glass of wine a week due to rheumatoid arthritis meds....sigh, so I had just a few sips and made do with water...double sigh.

I understand they own Blackberry Bistro also. Will have to try it soon.

It's sad that 2 of my favorite places are changing, the other being Cafe 817 which has been sold. Its fate is up-in-the-air. We went last Sat. for bkfst. The staff didn't know what was happening. Said they'd know in a couple of weeks. Must be really hard to work somewhere that is so unsettled. The 2 guys who are the main employees have been there for quite a few years.

Thanks for all the info and tips. Will have to try Oliveto downstairs and the places in Alameda.
