How can we say no to a dinner invitation? We don't want to appear ungracious even though we don't really like the boyfriend!

My friend has been dating this guy for over 3 years now - and neither my partner nor I like him. He can only talk about himself, has a very high opinion of himself and just really tries my patience especially. We are fine hanging out with him in a group, but do try to avoid double dates and the like just because he really ruins the night.

He has invited us to dinner at his house (he moved in a few months ago and we are yet to see it), which we didn't really mind going to - except that he wants to do it before Christmas. We have no free weekends (Friday to Sunday) between now and Christmas, and we have standing dinner plans every Tuesday (with my mum) that we would rather not change. We also have some work Christmas do's, some already organised catch ups with friends, sporting commitments and other family things on during the next few weeks.

Looking at our calendars, there is only 2 (maybe 3 if my partner's last game is cancelled) nights between now and Christmas where both my partner and I will be home. Is it wrong of us to want to just stay home instead of spend an evening with someone neither of us like? How would you say no to the invite without coming off as ungrateful or looking as if we're trying to get out of it?
