Dinner with inlaws

Lillla | Jan 9, 201809:43 AM

I am a newlywed and my in-laws are coming next Sunday to eat my cooking for the first time, there will be 5 of us total. I would like to impress with a French inspired meal. French onion soup to start, followed by a main, followed by a dessert - is there a french inspited way to do bread pudding? My other thought for dessert was a cheesecake, or a mousse but it's been deep winter here and I'm not sure a cold dessert would please.

I was thinking beef bourguignon and potatoes for the main. But is this stewy main too much wet after French onion soup?

I am a novice cook; I have a pressure cooker and a slow cooker but no Dutch oven. I thought of doing steak au poivre but the recipie mentions there will be tremendous smoke searing the steak. My littke apt. kitchen has no fan or window and I would be concerned to make my rooms smokey just as guests arrive.

I'm all nerves about this. Your advice is greatly appreciated!
