Dinner: Doris Metropolitan, 3/30

zin1953 | Apr 2, 201511:00 AM     4

Why isn't there an apostrophe? It's not "Doris," as in "Day"; it's "Dori's," as in "belonging to Dori." Whatever . . .

For our last dinner in NOLA, we checked in here. A funny thing happened on the way to . . . funny, I thought it was LA, but apparently it was Miami. Anyway, the owners decided to set up shop in New Orleans, and New Orleans should be quite happy they did!

My wife and I started out with two deceptively simple sounding salads, a Tomato Salad and an Endive Salad. But, I have to tell you, these salads were truly amazing! The tomato salad contained four different kinds of heirloom tomatoes, kalamata olives, greens, an egg yolk, labane, and manchego --it was at once bursting with delicious flavors, while retaining a sense of grace and balance. It was amazing! We've all had endive salad before, haven't we? Well, I'll never look at one the same way again. This one was filled with -- besides the endive -- fennel, carrots, shallots, walnuts, asparagus, gorgonzola, balsamic pearls, black garlic, and a delicate, sublime ginger vinaigrette. This was simply outstanding. Both salads were.

For our entrées, Lynn had the 21-day dry aged strip, while I had the 21-day dry aged rib-eye. Both were among the best steaks I've ever had. Period.

We looked around the dining room, which -- for most of our time there -- ranged from 1/2 to 2/3 full, and couldn't help but think that if this place were in LA, or San Francisco, Las Vegas or New York, it would probably be packed every night, and twice as expensive.

I grant you there is nothing *specifically* about this restaurant that screams "New Orleans," or "Creole," or "Cajun." It could fit in almost any city in America, but I am extremely pleased to have it in NOLA.
