Recently, dinner service started on week nights. Three different purveyors pop-up Monday through Friday.
Last week, Tommy has the Tuesday slot. He offers a daily dinner plate of homestyle cooking, only 20 portions a night. I called ahead to find out what was on offer and the idea of pork shanks braised with carrots served with potatoes sounded good to me.
A pair of pork "wild wings" (bone-in fibula) served with soft, sweet carrots braised in natural juices was the essence of comfort food. The pork shank cooked on the bone was tender as can be. Scallop potatoes on the side were tasty too. A dinner roll was included to soak up those lovely juices, and a Noni's biscotti for dessert. All for $10 (cash), including tax and tip.
Tommy said the week before was chicken and dumplings, his own Italian style and closer to gnocchi than an American dumpling. Tonight he's roasting a turkey, then next Tuesday is a bye-week for the holiday. Many customers get their order to go, calling ahead to reserve an order.
To drink, the bar hosts $2 Tuesdays and sells PBR, Tecate and several other brews for only two bucks.
