Four of us (two Chicago natives and two visitors from Washington, DC) had a great dinner at Calo's Ristorante in Andersonville Friday night (5343 N. Clark St.). The place has a fresh new look since remodeling recently and was certainly bustling. Live music played from the adjoining bar area. We started with very nice bruschetta and calamari. Main main courses included Shrimp De Jonghe (shrimp baked with butter, garlic, spinach, wine, and breadcrumbs); Rotolo Melanzana (eggplant rolled and stuffed with rocotta, garlic, parmigiana, with marinara and mozzarella) Lake Superior Whitefish sauted with lemon and garlic butter, and Halibut pan seared with portobellos, roasted red pepper, and asparagus in a balsamic reduction. Wow! Every one of these was really outstanding in presentation and flavor. Portions were generous and the prices surprisingly reasonable. Service was top-notch; our servers Perry and Saqib treated us royally. I can understand why this place is so popular. We will certainly head back there on our next trip to Chicago.
