I had no work today (snow day!) so I decided to treat myself to some dim sum in Chinatown....I decided to try New Shanghai based on the reviews on this board...I walked in and there were only two people there, sharing a plate of chow foon. The woman at the front asked me how many people, and I said "one for dim sum." She said "hold on a minute." She looked around for menus, then went to the back and came back with a few dim sum menus...just as she was about to seat me, a man who worked there came in and spoke to the woman in chinese (I don't speak chinese). Then he told me (in English) that they didn't have dim sum on weekdays, only on weekends. Today (at 11:15 AM) they only had lunch specials. He asked if I wanted to try the lunch specials, and I said "no thank you" and left. I was a bit puzzled because I was pretty sure that people on this board have had dim sum from New Shanghai on weekdays. Hmmm.
Luckily, the walk to Chau Chow City was short and the dim sum there was delicious. I had the spinach dumplings, stuffed bean curd skin (particularly hot and fresh today), and turnip cake (freshly fried for me in the cart ). Friendly service, lots of options and lots of people for a snowy Tuesday morning.
