Diamond Jubilee of 1928 San Francisco Classics

Melanie Wong | Oct 15, 200310:23 PM     13

Through kismet or coincidence I've had lunch at Alfred's, founded in 1928, and returned to the joys of It's-Its, invented in 1928, in the span of these last few days. Both of these San Francisco classics enjoy their 75th anniversary this year.

The San Francisco Seals won the pennant in 1928. Sunny Jim Rolph was the mayor. The Sir Francis Drake Hotel opened its doors. George Whitney started Playland-at-the-Beach, where he invented It's-Its.

Foodwise, New Joe's invented Joe's Special in that auspicious year. I think I'm fated to check out Original Joe's finally to celebrate this dish.

Any other 75 year-old SF classics to honor?
