[DFW] Wrigleyville Chicago Style Sandwiches in Plano

Benjamin | Dec 1, 200410:35 AM     6

A new fast food place serving Chicago Style sandwiches, hot dogs and briscuit chili just opened up this week in what used to be a defunct Der Wienerschitzel near my work on Jupiter Road (a few blocks North of George Bush) in Plano.

Never having spent much time in Chicago, I could not tell you if the food was authentic (the owner told me it was)... but it was impressivly good.

Yesterday for lunch I had the Italian Beef Sandwich which was just thinly sliced beef (that had been marinating in au jus) and peppers on a roll (menu says gonella bun). What was unusual about it is that it was very moist but not a really messy sandwich. The peppers were a combination of giardinera (a spicy vegi/pepper relish I had never seen before) and some long green peppers. I can't really explain why the sandwich was so good... but it was pretty damn good.

I went back for dinner that evening and ordered the briscuit chili on egg noodles. Again, very simple but impressive. I have never seen chili made with chunks briscuit before, but it seems to work quite well. The chili was well balanced. The meat almost seemed to have a smokey taste, but the cashier told me that they do not smoke their briscuit. Anyway, the chili was better than chili I have made myself, so its good in my book. Other discriminating chiliheads may disgree.

From talking to the owner and looking at their website, it looks like this is going to be the first store of a small chain. All I can do is hope that the food stays good once they start to expand. I'm sure that one of the reasons why the food was good is that it was made or closly supervised by one of the owners who knows what they are doing and are obviously passionate about food. I don't know what will happen once they put a $5 an hour high school kid in charge of the chili.
