I thought I was hallucinating this afternoon when I saw Joel Gilbert, the former owner of Gilbert's Deli, slicing corned beef behind the counter at Cindi's N.Y. Delicatiessen on Central Expressway. Sure enough, Joel Gilbert and his chef, Jerry, have joined Cindi's and are in the process of switching recipes and food suppliers over to those that they used back when Gilbert's was in business.
For now it looks like they have already switched the corned beef, pastrami, cole slaw, potato salad, and matzo ball soup over at the Central Expressway location only. (If I remember correctly, the other locations sell Boar's Head Brand).
I felt kind of bad for Anh Tran (the owner of Cindi's who was also behind the counter) because I could not contain my excitement over her recipes and suppliers being replaced, but I have to give her credit for making what I believe to be a good business move. And Anh, being the smart business woman that she is, just smiled and gave me a stack of postcards announcing Gilbert joining Cindi's, and told me to give them to my friends.
By the way, lunch was great. I had the first decent corned beef and pastrami sandwich I've had in months.
