I'm leaving DC for the weekend to explore a bit of the South. I have no idea where I'm going, but I'd like to get into as much of the South as I can within a few long days' drives of DC. I figure this includes all of Virginia and West Virginia, most of Kentucky and eastern Tennessee, and much of North Carolina. My real interest is just to do a lot of driving and see the area, so choosing restaurants as destinations works as well as anything else. (I did this a few weekends ago for the Chesapeake Bay area and found that driving all the backroads in search of restaurants I'd been told about was a great way to see the area.)
So what are some recommendations for the states I mentioned above? Any great restaurants that are worth setting as a destination, and that would give me a good sample of the real South along the way? Open to any suggestions.
