I moved to NYC this past summer and while I have been blown away by the quality and variety of food options compared to Boston, so far I have been very underwhelmed by the muffins, one of my favorite things in the world, and have not yet found a replacement for my old muffin place in Boston or my even older muffin place in DC (Marvelous Market has fantastic baked goods, brownies, muffins, cookies, gingerbread, all to die for, if you're ever in DC, be sure to go there. It's so good that I had friends who had to completely ban themselves from going there after I introduced them to the brownies because they found themselves unable to stop eating them).
Back to my current search, in spite of my love of cookies and brownies and cupcakes and sweet baked goods in general, I tend to err on the side of liking less sweet muffins, I really don't like the superrefined, overly white floury, starchy, or cakey type of muffins either. I love corn, bran, and especially pumpkin, but I'm really open to any type of muffin as long as it is quality, I'm totally willing to suffer for my obsession so please, suggest away, even if it might fall out of the above criteria. Any help, tips, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I truly would be willing to go anywhere in the city to track down my beloved muffin, but I'm on the UWS the most, followed by the UES, Midtown, and Gramercy/Flatiron. I have tried Silver Moon Bakery at 103rd and Broadway and the Little Red Hen Bakery at 86th and 2nd. Both have good muffins, maybe even great muffins, but don't quite hit what I'm looking for. Between the Bread, on 55th between 6th and 7th so far comes the closest to what I am looking for and I usually have a weekly muffin there, although I only eat the brany or lowfat ones because so far the other ones I've tried have been too refined, starchy, and bland. I know this is a long post, but I so enjoy my muffins that I can't stop talking about them once I get on a roll, I'm truly obsessed. Thank you for your help!
