Desert Island Eats...

A vacuous exercise, but you’re an opinionated bunch and who can resist a list ?

The (British) magazine “Restaurant” has apparently published its list of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants. This was selected by polling 50 top chefs/restauranteurs (with a presumably similarly British bias…). The following list was generated:

1. El Bulli (Barcelona)
2. Gordon Ramsay (London)
3. The French Laundry (Napa Valley)
4. Rockpool (Sydney)
5. Spoon (Mauritius)
6. Auberge de L’Ill (Alsace)
7. 1884 (Mendoza, Argentina)
8. The Ivy (London)

Collective outrage and a pointless argument could no doubt ensue over the rights and wrongs of this list (How did The Ivy get in the Top 10 ? How did Forrest Gump get an Oscar ?). But it did strike me that the Chowhound International Board represented a far greater pool of level-headed expertise that the pundits Restaurant Magazine had picked.

So (just a bit of fun…) I’d be interested to hear Hounds’ all time worldwide favourite eateries. Not necessarily what you think are the 8 most accomplished restaurants in the world. Just those which you’d choose to have on your desert island.

The normal ‘Desert Island’ rules are 8 records, one luxury and the Bible.

We can go for (up to) 8 restaurants, one piece of muzak and Larousse Gastronomique…
