As part of a life-long quest to slowly try all the great pizza parlors in the U.S. we drove to Staten Island yesterday and tried Deninos (the consensus on this board seems to put it at the top of the list on S.I). I think previous posters have commented on this being a real neighborhood restaurant - and it's clearly not your neighborhood. We certainly got that vibe, but everyone was very friendly.
We ordered the "Special" - mushrooms and sausage. The pie came out sizzling hot and nicely browned. We dug into a very good but not exceptional pie. The crust was medium thin and crispy, perhaps just a touch too crispy because it had stayed in the oven a few seconds too long. The cheese was basically tasteless but inoffensive, and the sauce a little sweet. The mushrooms were from a can and the sausage was tasty but not spicy. The pie needed generous sprinklings of the red pepper and oregano to give it more taste; nevertheless, I'd still rate this a good to very good pie. We'll probably not return to Deninos real soon, but look forward to trying some other Staten Island pizza spots.
One plus - this is probably one of the cheaper high quality pizzas in town - about $11.50 for a large pie.
