New Udon Place on the corner of Kings Cross Road and Acton Road.I'll gloss over the fact that the missus found out about the place before me.
It is in an old pub and is a bright, light space. There's six or seven communal tables and the paper menus on the tables immediately invite comparisons with Wagamamas, this though is where the comparison ends.
I was on my tod but managed to order a few dishes. Homemade pickles brought Chinese cabbage and carrots with some seaweed. Very subtle pickle, not too acid or salty , with a slight alcoholic note.
The crispy mackerel suffered slightly from the coating being a bit too soft. It was forgiven as this was a generous portion of mackerel, perfectly filleted pieces of beautifully fresh , properly fatty fish.
Udon noodles came in a very light broth,
which at first I thought was a bit underpowered but had a delicate smokeless which complimented the clams perfectly. Came with mizuna, which added freshness. The noodles themselves were excellent, nice and fat with good resistance.
All in all very good understated but accomplished cooking.
