Del Posto: How to get the four-star experience without waiting two months and spending $300

In a word, lunch.

We recently enjoyed a fabulous lunch at Del Posto. Although we made the reservation nearly a month in advance, there were a handful of empty tables (and plenty of lunch reservation for the near future are available on opentable).

From the moment we entered and were greeted by a hostess, taken to our table by the maitre d', served by a highly attentive, yet unobtrusive wait staff, assisted with wine choice by an enthusiastic sommelier until the moment we departed, we felt like special guests. All for $29 per person.

I highly recommend choosing the $15 wine pairing. Each course is accompanied by a 2.5-ounce glass of a wine chosen to match your selection of starter and main. We ordered a very lively pinot blanc from the Friuli. The wine list, which is more of a wine book, includes many selections of bottles priced from $30-50.

The roasted seasonal root vegetables (photo attached, apologies for the poor resolution) were outstanding, a whole-wheat pasta with a chickpea-based sauce was enjoyable and the striped bass done to perfection and generous. Plenty of amuses and a nice selection of desserts (I suggest the chestnut cake) followed by more amuses (the Italian doughnut was memorable).

We were able to dine leisurely (arrived at 1:15, left at nearly 4:00). We were full until the next morning.

Live piano music was a pleasant feature of the room, which had a very low noise level.
Highly recommended.
