I know the "What menu items need to be retired" posts have been slamming on cupcakes and while I agree they are EVERYWHERE and for the most part underwhelming, I had one the other day that changed my mind. The Cup in Knoxville (I believe it is a chain) makes a Gold Rush cupcake which is moist yellow cake with a chocolate buttercream and it is fantastic (which is the reason I go there), but the true winner was the Maple, Bacon, and Pecan cupcake. It was OUTSTANDING. Slighlty savory and salty with the crunch of pecans and perfect maple sweetness.
I like a cupcake for 2 reasons:
1. As a two-person household whose SO doesn't eat sweets, a cupcake is perfect because I can split it into 2 days and eat it before I have to throw away a whole cake!
2. It allows me to try a new flavor inexpensively
So my question is-
1. Are there any AWESOME cupcakes you have had with a wacky flavor combo that was better than a whole cake.
2. Do you choose cupcakes over a whole cake regularly?
