Deeply boring sausage balls

We were supposed to go to a potluck kinda party tonight, and I decided (it being ridiculously chilly here in LA County just lately) that I'd make some good ol' sausage balls like I did back in Nashville. I had somehow misplaced my recipe from back then, but had gotten another from Recipezaar or one of them. It called for three cups of Bisquick, one pound of hot (as in spicy) bulk sausage, and ten ounces of cheese. Well, that seemed a bit out of whack, but I just increased the cheese and let it go at that...and was rewarded with about six dozen balls of baked dough with a vaguely sausage-like flavor and no taste of cheese whatsoever. Can't even tell that the sausage was Jimmy Dean Hot...

As luck would have it, Mrs. O got struck with God's Own Headache and we had to send our regrets for the party, and I just put the Boring Balls in the freezer. But I'm thinking that this recipe should have just enough baking mix to hold everything together, which would seem to require a ratio of 1 cup Bisquick to 1 lb. sausage to 8 oz. of cheese. You folks that bake regularly, what do you think?
