Golden Wok restaurant, a hulking giant from a bygone era of oversized and very dark Chinese restaurants has been living on Villa St one block off Castro St for a very long time. It is largely ignored by food enthusiasts. However, since September they have been serving Dim Sum daily from 11-3pm. I went today and it was surprisingly good. Plump, firm fleshed shrimp made the Shrimp Gow addictive. Pan Fried Leek Dumplings had that translucent sheen with an itty bit of green peeking through their carmelized crusts complementing their robust texture and flavor. Snow pea shoots were lightly stir fried and still firm on delivery. Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls were also stuffed with very fresh looking and tasting shrimp. When asked why they don't advertise, our waiter said they prefered word of mouth to splashy ads to get the word out.
