I just wanted to write that I had a transcendent potato pancake at Ben's Deli. Nicely onion-y, crisp and not too greasy. (I didn't realize that the deli was kosher and would've liked some sour cream). And I had an over-over-stuffed tuna sandwich...lots of albacore and just a bit of celery! (My pet peeve is when you order a tuna salad and it's basically celery salad accented with bits of tuna.) One of the food prep guys was leaving as I was and he said, "You liked the tuna salad?" "Oh yes!" I replied. "I made it just for you," he said. I can tell I'm going to like that place.
As for Mickey's, it seemed a favorable omen that they had they had a special fish of the evening: white tuna. Fresh and delicious with a little grated ginger on top! They were out of mackerel but the spicy tuna roll was great. (I wasn't too impressed with the cooked dishes...the noodles in the kitsune udon seemed more like linguine, and my boyfriend wasn't thrilled with his pork shogayaki.) But they were so friendly! Jennifer told us that she'd been there for 16 years and that people returned from Connecticut and New Jersey just to eat there.
I walked down to Junction Boulevard and was so overwhelmed by all the neon that I was stunned into retreating. For my next attempt, does anyone have any recommendations? I seem to have spied a Colombian Chicken place.
