A Day Without Immigrants – Salinas – Feb 16

Melanie Wong | Feb 16, 201701:23 PM

Driving my mother to a morning doctor’s appointment in Salinas today, the streets were so empty and quiet. Very eerie.

Afterwards we cruised along Alisal and Market streets, the main commercial streets in the heavily Latino East Salinas neighborhood. I’d estimate that about 75% of the businesses are closed today for A Day Without Immigrants / Un Día Sin Inmigrante. The sign above was posted at Jaliscience on Sanborn Road.

Here’s a list of the food businesses that are closed today that I observed or were noticed by my friends.

BKM Healthy Foods
Culturas Hidalgo y Oaxaca
Delicias Taqueria
El Charrito
El Zacatecano
Eva’s Cafe
Fresh Market Produce
Guadalajara Bakery
Indoor Swap Meet
Jaliscience restaurants
Jugo Tropical
La Mexicana Panaderia
La Michoacana
La Plaza bakeries
La Princessa markets
La Salsa Mexican Restaurant
La Viña markets
Mama Lupita’s
Market El Rancho
Maritza's market
Mercado Alisal
Mountain Mike’s Pizza
Oriental Chinese Restaurant
Original Stonies
Panaderia Tres Hermanos
Santa Fe markets
Soledad Bakery

And taco trucks that are not in their usual spots today:
El Grullense
Mariscos El Compita
Mister Taco
Taco Rico

This morning protestors were gathered outside Mi Pueblo supermarket in Alisal that stayed open today, chanting “¡Mi Pueblo no ya es mi pueblo!”
