David’s Restaurant in Fort Bragg [Mendocino County]

My pre-trip plan had penciled in David’s for breakfast. With an unexpectedly late start and road work delays on Hwy 1, I’d skipped ahead straight to lunch. Since my attempts at a seafood lunch were going awry and it was already 1pm, I threw myself into reverse and went back to Plan A breakfast. Good decision as this place was not only open for business and serving, but humming and packed with locals. On the specials board: prime rib plate for $14 and blueberry pie.

From my perch on a counter stool, I had a good vantage point to see the food shuttled out of the kitchen. Giant salads served in deep clear plastic bowls packed with greens and piled with cheese and meats seemed to be a popular order. The prime rib special was moving well, as were burgers, soup and salad orders, and breakfast plates.

Complimentary carrot and celery sticks with ranch dressing dip were a welcome and more healthful change from an offering of bread.

My breakfast order was the single biscuit topped with sausage gravy, $5.50. But before it came out I caught a whiff of clam chowder going by. A bowl of clam chowder, $6.50, looked thicker than it turned out to be. Packed with chopped clams, bacon, potatoes, celery, and herbs, this was quite savory. An excess of California bay laurel dominated the flavor, but was otherwise quite good. After tasting a couple spoonfuls, I had it packed to take home.

The B&G plate was swimming in velvety cream gravy packed with bacon and bits of sausage. The split biscuit was crusty on the outside and fluffy and tender within. While I prefer a flaky style of biscuit, this was an excellent version of B&G.

Then I gave in to the blueberry pie, $3.50, served warm, but declined the ala mode treatment. Lots of blueberries, however, overly sweet and the pie crust was tough.

I’d return to David’s for a solid effort at a fair price.
