There's a new Indian restaurant that has just opened in Durham. It's just down the street from Vin Rouge and Elmo's ( but before Magnolia Grill) in the new office/shopping complex that was just built.
The name alone intrigued me enough to try their lunch buffet. Well, it was a typical Indian buffet, 8 choices of dishes, with dark meat chicken being the only choices (butter chicken and the ubequitous tandoori chicken). However, it had a few strong pluses. The firs tbig plus is that soon after sitting down with my plate a basket of hot, fresh naan was brought to the table, for free! As ya'll probably know, there is a huge difference when the naan is fresh. I hope this is not a recent opening ploy to generate good word of mouth; hopefully they'll continue to do this. The second plus is that the food, especially the vegetables, tasted fresher and had more crunch than other Indian joints I've tried. I think thi is because they cook their food in smaller batches. Lastly, the chutney's and relishes were above average. However, there was no sambar (a tangy vegetable soup) or dessert (golab jamun or rice pudding) like they have at Sitar India Palace.
After a meal, a fun excursion is to visit the World Market store next door.
