In years past, there already would be lengthy debates on this board of the merits of Dairy Joy, on Route 117 in Weston, by this point in the summer. Alas, now that one can hear the crickets on this board, that no longer is the case.

Today I picked up lunch for my home-bound parents, my brother and me. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to DJ; I’m no longer based in the Boston area and it’s not always top of mind. But I’m always thinking of what my parents would enjoy my bringing to them to escape the drudgery of the food service that’s available where they live. Max & Leo’s, Oga’s, Sichuan Gourmet, Formaggio bbq; all good options, but I’m always looking for new ones. (Suggestions welcome!)

Today Dairy Joy popped into my head. I arrived at 11:40 to a handful of customers but no line. For the four of us I ordered two lobster rolls ($22.95 each), three small clams ($19.95 each), two small fries and two small rings.

Total was $138. Yes, $138. The quantity of food was perfect. There were some fries and rings left over, but no lobster (we each had half a roll) and no clams. And we were all quite sated.

The quality of the food was superb. The lobster rolls were mostly tail meat served in a buttered and toasted New England-style top-split bun, the way god intended it. I have zero doubt that DJ buys their lobster meat in tubs, but at least they buy fresh and high quality tubs.

It’s been too long since I’ve been to the north shore so it’s difficult to make a direct comparison, but I believe the clams were as good and well prepared as what you’d expect up north (albeit in a less scenic setting). Their rings were great as always, and the fries were serviceable.

Bottom line: no change in my years-long assessment of Dairy Joy. Eye wateringly expensive, but a great product. Worth it for an occasional splurge IMHO.
