This place is not going to rival Kopps or Penguin, but it is a small soft serve drive-in in Libertyville. I believe this is an independent, though Dairy Dream doesn't seem to be an uncommon name for a small ice cream parlor. So it may be a small franchise.
Dairy Dream a la Libertyville serves a soft serve which is 95% fat free or 5% fat content, which pales by Kopp standards. They also serve a no-fat yogurt soft serve. The basic flavors are chocolate and vanilla.
They also serve 33 flavors, which are based on the chocolate and vanilla flavors. For instance, they offer pistachio nut. They put a portion of vanilla into a mixing cup add pistachio flavoring and mix it together. To give the swirl presentation, they put the pistachio soft serve into a press and it squeezes a portion in the classic swirl into a cone or cup.
Like Dairy Queen, they offer dipped cones, which gives your ice cream a chocolate crust. When I was a wee one, I always favored a dipped cone.
The other evening, I had their Turtle Sundae. It was a combination of caramel, vanilla soft serve but instead of hot fudge they dipped the entire sundae in the chocolate. So instead of soft fudge, there was a chocolate crust, then they added the salted pecans and canned low fat whipped cream.
The signage is handpainted and quaint by today's standards. When a flavor is discontinued, no problem! They just take a permanent marker to make squiggly markings on it. If their going to so much trouble, why not use white duct tape for a better presentation.
They also offer hamburgers and hot dogs, though I have no information on them.
I believe Dairy Dream has a storefront location further west of the drive-in, but I couldn't locate the address. The drive-in is open seasonally.
Something to do on the way home from a certain pig roast.
