Daedalus report

twentyoystahs | Mar 3, 2006 10:38 AM

Thanks to all re your Harvard Sq recs yesterday. We went to Daedalus and it was a great choice. On the advice of a fellow hound, I make a reservation there (which I wouldn't even have thought to do, so thanks for that) and that was a smart idea, cause the place definitely filled up. By the time we left (9ish?) the upstairs bar area was packed.

We sat at the bar to start and I enjoyed a nice Newcastle on tap. They've got a good selection of beer on draft, but I can't resist a Newcastle....

The host was very accomodating, when our party was complete we were brought upstairs to our table for 4.
We started with an order of calamari. I'm not much of a fried calamari fan, I just feel like it's on every menu and after a while it all starts to taste the same...but not their version --wow. I think it might be the best rendition I've ever had. Really fresh, tender, lightly fried calamari. Drizzed w/ a sorta spicy glaze and some kind of soy/asian dipping sauce. Phenomenal, really. Entrees: I got the fish special of the night, a grilled swordfish w/mango salsa and orzo. Cooked perfectly, the sauce was really flavorful --DC tried it and thought it was good but a little salty...but I didn't notice that at all. A filet mignon special was ordered, was cooked more on the side of MR than medium but I didn't hear any complaints and it looked great. And then two salads -- a cobb salad and a prosciutto salad. I think both diners liked their salads though the cobb was slightly underdressed. The most expensive entree was the filet mignon, for $21, which I think is pretty reasonable. Salads were huge and around $10..I think my swordfish was around $18, again, pretty reasonable.

All in all, I really liked this place. I like this place. It's warm and welcoming, with a good crowd

The one glitch --our server was not so great. We were greeted immediately but then she server seemed preoccupied with another party sitting near us --I think like 6 people, who seemed to overwhelm her. She was always over there. After taking our order we really never saw her again except when she dropped the check--other servers brought our entrees and no one ever came back to check and see how things were. As a former server, sort of a pet peeve of mine. ALWAYS come back to the table and check on everyone. I might need another beer, someone might need some dressing on the side (which she did!), whatever. That's the only thing about this place that turned me off, and honestly, it's all about the server so I'd give 'em another shot.

Fit the bill for a casual, relaxed spot with good food and reasonable prices. Thanks guys.
