Da Fiore--more hype than taste?

I recently made my 12th visit to Venice and decided it was time to eat at the famed Da Fiore. Reservations were made well in advance, as suggested.

What an expensive disappointment! There were three of us (and wound up with a bill of 371.00 euro--more on that later), all certified chowhounds.

Antipasti (scallops in their shells with thyme, spider crab, and baccala) were very good--raising our hopes.

The risotto was good, but not as wonderful as R.W. Apple's wife found it. For the secondi, two of us shared the fried fish to see how they prepared the Venetian classic. It was okay. (But we had better in a little hole-in-the-wall in Dorsoduro.)

The third diner, after a lenghty discussion with the waiter about the tuna slices with rosemary (ordered it. She did not want it rare and the waiter said they never cooked it that way. Guess what? It was rare. The original waiter never returned and flagged down someone else, who took it back to the kitchen. We tend to think they stuck it in a microwave, because the dish reappeared in about a minute and tasted a bit rubbery.

The bill? An extra dessert had been added and was removed, without apology. We were charged for two limoncellos which were offered with their "compliments."

Maybe it was an off night, but I didn't get a discount for that! In my opinion, there are many better restaurants in Venice. For example, try the TRATTORIA Da Fiore, not related, in San Marco for a much more "Venetian," and a heck of lot less expensive meal!

My question: when did Da Fiore receive its famed Michelin star? Does it still have it?
