curing a molcajete

david in NOLa | Feb 20, 2003 06:55 AM

Just got my molcajete y tejolote (basalt mortar and pestle from Mexico) in the mail. Instructions offer two curing methods, one involving repeatedly grinding rice until it grinds clean, and the other involving cumin seed, kosher salt, and a couple of garlic cloves, all ground together in the molcajete and then left to stand over night.

I'm curious about any experiece hounds have had with molcajetes, curing them especially, but any other Dos and Donts or other advise too.
