I recently visited Des Moines and was really impressed by the quality of croissants I happened upon. Most mornings I started off with a cappuccino and croissant from Scenic Route Bakery in the East Village. I really appreciated their selection of savory varieties--ham and cheese and another than changed daily, but the plain was also great. It’s a very flaky and airy style, though the butter flavor is still apparent.
I also got La Mie croissants one day, and they were less flaky, but more buttery, and also quite good. I didn’t have room in my croissant stuffed belly to try any of the sweets made with the laminated dough (and I prefer savory), but many looked quite good, and my childhood memories of fruit and custard pastries from the Amanas lead me to believe such things might be good here. It’s good for my waistline that I was only there three days, but I miss those croissants already.
