CremaLita hits LA, with a thud

PayOrPlay | Feb 29, 2004 12:55 AM

So Saturday afternoon my darling bride, who is a low-fat yogurt addict, dragged me over to the new CremaLita low fat ice cream stand in Santa Monica (on Santa Monica Blvd. W of 4th St.). She excitedly dashed into the store while I circled the block several times and our two-year-old slept soundly in the back seat. She proudly emerged with hefty helpings of pistachio and dulce de leche, hopped in the car, and we both took our first taste, and—

For me, at least, this stuff had a distinct, bitter metallic aftertaste, which I think may have been sorbitol. I could eat only two spoonfuls--but I am exceptionally averse to artificial sweetener. My wife is more used to the artificial sweetener taste, but she didn’t like CremaLita either; we both found the flavors bland and plastic-tasting. The texture is reasonably creamy, and this is the only good thing we could find to say about this stuff. Otherwise we can think of no good reason to try it again. My wife will return to The Bigg Chill where she is a frequent flyer, and maybe some day we will get a chance to try New York's other beloved confection, Tasti D-Lite, which notably claims not to contain any of the artificial stuff that so tainted our experience of CremaLita.
