recently had to use some heavy cream for some desserts ..... Smart & Final is the place to save some $$. They sell Berkeley Farms Manufacturing Cream - half gallon for $6.65 (IIRC) - this is a great deal: At Safeway a pint of heavy whipping cream will set you back about $4.50 or more I think. At that rate, a half gallon would be in the $18 range for something that doesn't have as much richness (fat) as the manufacturing cream. Manufacturing Cream (MC) is about 40% fat while whipping cream is about 28% fat. At Smart & Final they also sell a quart of MC for about $5.50 - still a deal compared to most supermarkets. Don't know Costco's product line well enough to say what they carry in this vein. A few years back when I was shopping more often for large groups, Costco didn't carry heavy cream. So S&F was the place to go for MC and unsalted butter in quantity but now Costco has unsalted butter. Overall, S&F's food offerings aren't quite as interesting as Costco's but the lines are way shorter!
