What crabs do I have?

lamb_da_calculus | Dec 25, 201502:23 PM     10

I bought a few live crabs from a Dalls Vietnamese supermarket yesterday. The label said Dungeness but, having now read about the Dungeness shutdown this year, I'm guessing they can't be. On the other hand, they do have the distinctive white-dot marking on the shell that apparently identifies Dungeness.

We just called the supermarket about this and they said the crabs are all gone, even though there were at least several dozen live in the tank yesterday. We asked where they were from, and they could only trace it back as far as "the airport".

Anyone have any theories? It seems unlikely that leftovers from last year are still alive in tanks. I always imagined they'd die within weeks in those tanks. Maybe they were harvested before the ban went into effect, although I think it's been a while?

It sucks, but we're leaning toward just tossing it ($60 worth!). Domoic acid doesn't seem worth fooling around with.
