Cooking with Wine. Help needed for a quick question.

I have a recipe that I want to make this weekend that calls for a dry red wine. I love whites but my head does not love reds. So I know pretty much nothing about them. I have some idea of what qualifies as a dry red (Cabs, Shiraz) but I'd also heard that it also depends on the recipe itself.

I'm hoping it is ok to post the recipe here and then get specific help for the wine suggestions. I know it's better to pay a bit more for it but I don't want to spend too much as what is not used for cooking will get tossed. Thanks in advance for the help!

Greek Beef Stew

1 med onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 1/2lbs cubed beef (leaner is better)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp oregano
3/4 tsp cinnamon
28 oz can crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup dry red wine


Place onions, garlic and beef in crockpot. Add spices, tomatoes and liquid.
Cook on LOW 8-10 hours.
Serve over couscous, orzo, mashed potatoes or rice.
