Cooked Flour Frosting - I'm scared

First, I feel like a complete dumbass for only recently discovering that something like this existed. Second, I've been reading (probably too much) and now I'm scared that it will be ruined. Out of all of the recipes I've read, it seems that there is a warning attached saying "you will f this up the first time around". Also, I've seen many different complaints about the frosting being runny or gritty. Please help me successfully make cooked flour frosting. I was looking at the Cook's Country recipe:

Any other tried and true recipes/tips are welcome.
