I went to Congee Village again yesterday. The congee we ordered was the best ever. We got a roast duck with preserved egg that was superb(it's not listed on the menu so you have to ask for it). Also the thick, slushy and flaverful Watermelon juice was quite the perfect summer heat antidote.

The two other dishes we ordered have been recomended around these parts but were a bit of a letdown. I think we ordered the right item that was recommended on Chowhound, the steamed chicken with black mushroom, it was on the House Special section? It's a bit confusing though as Chicken with B. Mushroom is listed in two other sections. It came in a huge bamboo steamer lined with a (banana?) leaf and had red dried dates that were tough to eat and some nice woody black mushrooms. It was pretty good, not amazing. No rice and I thought it was going to be more of a casserole. A ton of chicken for sure. The whole thing had a bit of a funky taste though that was alternately appealing and turnoffish. Then the Lotus root in red bean sauce was about a hundred very thin identical slices of lotus root in a thin red sauce that wasn't particularly sweet or as red-beany as I would have liked. Maybe I had them on an off night as it was sunday but I'm just curious if anyone else has tried these two.
