congee / jook

Thi N. | Dec 12, 200501:17 PM

Chinese, etc. rice porridge. Preferably with doughnuts to mix in.

Places I've tried:

Phoenix Inn in Chinatown. A good congee, with decent doughnuts. The one with raw fish stirred in to cook is pretty nice here. Open til 2 AM. Currently the stop of choice.

Kim Tar in San Gabriel. It was open at 2:30 AM, when I strolled in. Nicely textured shrimp and squid on the noodles, but the congee stank of too much MSG and crappy broth. Sad.

Siam Sunset? I can't remember the name. The Thai place on Sunset in the motel across from the 99 cent store, right by Western. Very good congee at breakfast, very delicate, with fresh, raw ginger bits over the top. My favorite by far, but they close at, like, 6, and mostly I tend to want congee past midnight.

Other suggestions?
