Just to wrap up the story (of my filling in for a vacationing monastery cook), the monks told us they didn't need the last 2 meals we had planned to make (too many leftovers). We did make them some sides for hamburgers and hotdogs, and today I'm actually making them an unrequested batch of "Meatless Sloppy Joes" from Pam Anderson's How to Cook without a Book: Meatless Meals.
I guess the best compliment was when talking to one of the young priests yesterday who didn't know we weren't doing any more meals for them before their cook comes back tomorrow. He said "Oh no!" with a disappointed look. Also, the superior asked if we wanted a job when their cook retires in 5 years. Guess they don't have the heart to get rid of a guy even if his food makes them sick. (In case you missed that from a previous post, my husband and I found out that the most lauded feature of our dishes was that "no one got sick!" as the young monk in charge of the kitchen told me. I would have been much calmer about the whole experience if I had known that that was the main goal. :-)
