Thursday I swung by Fisherman’s Wharf to check out The Codmother Fish and Chips that has been recommended on the board a few times. This stationary food truck is parked next to Tanguito, the Argentine empanada specialist, and offers seating at outdoor tables protected by tenting. Here’s the menu,
For my first visit, I only had eyes for the Baja style battered and fried fish or shrimp tacos. Two to an order, they can be requested as a combo. One of each came to $7.07, including tax. Available in mild, medium or spicy, I went all out ordering “spicy”. The spice level determining medium or spicy is gauged by the amount of bottled hot sauce splashed on the taco. On
The shrimp one included two big fat shrimp in a flaky, light batter, perfectly fried. Dolloped with “Baja sauce” and garnished with fat shreds of cabbage and whole leaves of cilantro, this one was a little too hot for me, maybe because the amount of shrimp was too skimpy to soak up the hot sauce. Good, but not craveable.
Far more pleasing was the Baja fish taco. Very crunchy and airy batter encased wild-caught, Alaska cod that almost melted like butter in the mouth. While the batter’s quite plain compared to what you’ll find in Ensenada, the generous dressing of Baja sauce made crema and a blend of fresh and dried chiles unleashed a wallop of flavor. The amount of hot sauce for “spicy” was just right on this one, maybe due to the greater amount of fish. The cabbage was somewhat dried out and cut too big and the papery corn tortillas mostly served to keep one’s hands clean. Priced at $5.75 for a pair, these might be the best QPR fish tacos out there.
Since the tortillas and the cabbage weren’t up to snuff, my next order will be fish and chips and a side of the delectable Baja sauce. Not traditional, but this dressing atop fried fish is indeed addictive.
Who can tell us about the deep-fried Oreos and Snickers?
