My girlfriend and I just came back from a week in Playa del Carmen (about an hour south of Cancun). While the beaches were stunning and impossible to replicate in Los Angeles, I'm hoping I can find a reasonable reproduction of all the great foods I enjoyed.
As the subject suggests, my favorite would be Cocteles de Cameron, or Mexican Style Shrimp Coctails. In Playa, they came chilled, served in a glass cup of varying size (small, medium, or large) with a delicious tangy red sauce mixed with lime juice, onion, cilantro, and sometimes cinnamon. The shrimp were always fresh from the Gulf and delicious.
Does anyone know the best place in LA or surrounding 'hoods (food trucks too!) where I can get an authentic Cocteles de Cameron? I've tried the ones at Tacos Baja on Whittier and they were so-so. The sauce was a bit fishy and I wasn't too enthused about the vein-in shrimp. Well I'm done. Who's got some suggestions?
