Coconut water

Brooklyn Boy | Jul 16, 2002 12:48 PM

Yesterday I visited a friend in the Bronx and tried another Jamaican vegetarian restaurant. The food was a smorgasboard of curried tofu chunks, rice and peas, macaroni salad, scrambled tofu, cabbage, calaloo, and assorted vegetables. I also tried a soybean patty and a clear drink called coconut water. My buddy's wife, who is from Trinidad, loves the stuff, but I wasn't so enthusiastic. It looks exactly like water, but tastes like liquid coconut. I guess I expected it to be sweeter... All in all, the food was decent, but not nearly as good as D Ital Shack in Brooklyn. For those interested in trying it, it's located at 754 Burke Avenue (between Wallace and Holland). Ride the #5 train to Burke Avenue and walk 2-3 blocks east. Phone number is 718-653-9627.
